2010 International Year of Biodiversity

2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity. This has been declared by the Unitied Nations. The goal of this year is to stress the importance of biodiversity for our well-being; to reflect on the achievements to safeguard biodiversity so far and to redouble our efforts to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss.

The Iish response to the International Year of Biodiversity is being co-ordinated by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government through its Notice Nature Campaign.

The IPCC and other Irish non governmental organisations under the banner of the Irish Environmental Network (www.ien.ie) have developed an interesting programme of activities for International Year of Biodiversity. Some of these are events that began in 2009 to help kick start the year of biodiversity. But the bulk of activity is concentrated in 2010. It includes once off events to help celebrate biodiversity, training programmes to help Irish people take action for biodiversity throughout the year and projects specifically designed to start dialogue between stakeholders for steps to be taken in the post 2010 period to protect biodiversity and reduce the rate of its loss.

IPCC would like to thank the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, the Notice Nature Campaign., the Irish Environmental Network, Kildare County Council and IPCC Friends of the Bog for supporting the IPCC's programme of activity and campaigns for 2010.

We also acknowledge and thank the members of the public, the local community, IPCC friends of the bog and volunteers who took part in the various events.

The IPCC Programme for the International Year of Biodiversity includes the following events and programmes.
