According to North American Indian tradition,
a dream web or dream catcher hung over your bed will catch bad
dreams before they can reach you - so why not make our version
and try! Traditionally these were made from objects such as eagle
feathers and bones, but these are hard to find in most parts
of Ireland! So, instead, use whatever natural objects you can
collect in your garden or nearby to decorate your web.
You will need:
A thin flexible branch of willow or honeysuckle.
Coloured wool or string.
Natural objects for decoration, such as dried leaves, feathers,
seed pods, cones, grasses, shells, whatever you like.
What to Do:
1. Trim off any side shoots from your branch.
2. Slowly bend the branch to form an oval shape and tie the ends
together with some of the wool or string.
3. Imagine the frame is like a clock. Tie the string to the frame
at 12, 2, 4, 6, and 8 all the way around until you get to 10
12 oclock taking care to keep the string tight.
4. On the second time around tie the string to the middle of
the piece of sting between 12 and 2 oclock, then to the middle
of the piece between 2 and 4 oclock. Keep the string tight. Continue
the parttern until the web is completed. Knot the sting and trim.
5. Now it's time to decorate the web. Tie string or wool to the
natural objects you collected and attach them to the web wherever
you like.
6. Last of all hang the web up over your bed and have sweet dreams!
