Turf Bank Investigation - Making a Bog Calendar

At a turf bank you can see that the peat in the bog is made up of differently coloured layers.

Age

The peat in a bog grows by 1 mm each year. Work out the age of the peat bank and put a timescale on your diagram. Measure the height of the peat bank. Identify different layers in the bank. Describe plant remains present, peat colour, wetness, smell and the degree of decomposition of the peat in each layer. Usually the darker the colour of the peat the more decomposed it is. Highly decomposed peat has very few identifiable plant remains present in it.

What grows on top of the peat bank? Fill in the diagram below.

Finally illustrate your bog calendar with important local history events.
