Welcome to Bogs in the Classroom. This educational web site focusing on bog field studies has been developed by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council with a grant from the Research & Development Committee of the Department of Education and Science, Ireland.

We are pleased to present materials to help you prepare primary, post primary and third level students for a field trip to a bog, suggestions for field investigations you might like to undertake and follow up activities to complete your study.

Bogs are widespread in Ireland and all over the world. A range of studies can be carried out from those that focus on the ecological aspects of the bog habitat to those that look at their historical and cultural hertiage or at the environmental issues raised through the various uses of peat.

The material is presented in seven modules - 6 subject modules and a resources module. Materials for primary and post primary students are separated within the subject modules. Each module includes information regarding the class level and curriculum links for which they are intended with special emphasis on Primary SESE and Post Primary Leaving Certificate Biology and Geography Curricula. A brief description of the content of each module is provided together with an immediate link to the material below.

Material in the resources module is to be used generally by both primary and post primary teachers depending on the work programme being undertaken. Within this module there are suggested study programmes for primary and post primary students, tips for teachers intending to undertake a field trip and there is a questions and answers section. IPCC will be happy to answer any queries you have. You can email us from the home page of our website.

If you wish to print pages from this site, please ensure to adjust your page margins to 10mm all round so that the material fits on an A4 page.
