Sphagnum moss is one of the few plants that likes the wet acid bogs. It can grow in the bog, trapping water in its spongy body. Each Sphagnum plant can hold up to 20 times its own weight in water. Different species of Sphagnum moss cover the surface of the bogs. Some live in bog pools, while others prefer to be drier, on the tops of small hummocks.

The carpet of bog moss covering the bog is full of colours - greens, reds, yellows, oranges and ginger browns. This soft squidgey carpet is where other bog plants are found.

Sphagnum moss is a living carpet of colour on the bog surface.
