The Save the Bogs Campaign began in 1982.
It is run by the IPCC (or Irish Peatland Conservation Council).
The plan is to protect bogs and their wildlife. There are many ways that the IPCC helps bogs
and wildlife. It buys land to make nature reserves for the plants
and animals that depend on bogs. It asks governments for special
laws to protect bogs, their wildlife and birds. It writes books
and makes videos about bogs and shows people the practical ways
they can help to protect bogs. It studies all kinds of bogs to
find out how they work and the best ways to repair them if they
have been damaged. We are great friends with bog people in the
Netherlands who have helped us a lot. There are lots of things you can do to help
save bogs. You've already done something positive by taking this
tour on our website. But there are one or two very practical
things that you can start doing right now. You can join the Mónóga Wildlife
Club and meet other people like yourself. There's a great welcome
for you when you join and lots of great things to do. You can start collecting used postage stamps
and send them to IPCC. We can sell them to stamp dealers to raise
funds for bog conservation. You could stop using peat to feed your garden
soil. Why not make your own compost by collecting leaves in Autumn
or making a compost heap or worm bin. Your garden plants will
love these home-made products, and you can leave the peat in
the bog where wild flowers and animals depend on it.
