Composting: Winning the Battle Against Waste

Frequently asked questions about community composting

Why should we bother composting our organic waste?
Composting is an ideal way to turn what is a waste products that can cause all sorts of pollution problems in landfills into a useful garden product that also reduces our dependence on peat. This has the knock on effect of reducing our need for peat, helping to protect these important wildlife habitats.

What is the best way to set up a community composting scheme?
There are many different ways to organise a large scale composting scheme. You could contact suppliers of gardening equipment to see what type of bins are available. Alternatively you could build your own - see the IPCC Guide to Community Composting. Remember, as long as it works, and does not attract vermin, it doesn't matter what it looks like! In Crampton Buildings we started off using a large wheelie bin and then were given a prototype plastic bin courtesy of the Irish Earthworm Company. Both worked extremely well.

What other sources of information are there out there that I could read?
Check out our list of other reading and web resources to help you.

What sources of funding are there out there that a community group could tap into?
Better Ireland Awards - Heritage and Environment Scheme, Allied Irish Banks, Group Public Affairs, Bankcentre, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, Tel: 01 - 6600311

Environmental Partnership Fund, Department of the Environment, Custom House, Dublin 1, Tel: 01 - 8882000

The best way to apply for funding here is to have a joint scheme with your county council, or to have a council assisted scheme, as the funding resources for private schemes are more difficult to get.
