The Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) is seeking a person to fill the post of Development Officer.

The IPCC is an environmental organisation based in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre in Co. Kildare. This is a centre of excellence for peatland conservation, education and research, which is open to visitors. The role of Development officer is crucial in communicating our campaigns to the public and raising funds to achieve our mission of conserving a representative sample of the peatlands of Ireland for future generations to enjoy.

The job will involve the following tasks:

o Increasing the supporter base of the charity substantially by implementing a variety of fundraising and supporter development schemes.

o Increasing awareness of peatland conservation and biodiversity protection through the provision of printed newsletters, supporter welcome packs, press releases, press interviews, web mail, organisation of events and meeting and guiding visitors to the nature centre.

o Maintaining a database of supporters including inputting all responses such as funding donations, volunteer activity and other responses.

o Generating fund raising and supporter appeals from the supporter database as part of the annual fundraising strategy of the IPCC.

o Office and Nature Shop management - ordering stationery, stock purchase and stock control, invoicing, post, telephone, email, reception duties, book keeping, cash analysis, annual stock take.

o Nature Gift Shop Business - preparing the annual Christmas Card and Gifts Catalogue for printing. Processing and dispatching mail order parcels and developing a network of external outlets for IPCC's shop products.

IPCC operates in a Macintosh environment for all its data-basing and desk top publishing work. The successful applicant will have relevant database, business management, web site, writing/publishing and fund raising experience; excellent inter-personal, communications and organisational skills; computer and internet literacy, an interest in the environment and natural habitats; a willingness to be flexible in terms of working hours and learning computer packages operational within the organisation and a proven record to deliver results.

Ideally the successful candidate must be suitably qualified with a background in environmental or heritage studies combined with a business qualification and should enjoy meeting people.

The applicant will work from the IPCC headquarters at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre, Lullymore, Rathangan, Co. Kildare on a daily basis.

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council is a national charity campaigning for the protection of a representative sample of bogs and fens. We are based in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre at Lullymore in Co. Kildare. This is a centre of excellence for peatland conservation, education and research. It is open to the public, volunteers and IPCC supporters all year round. It houses a variety of exhibitions, gardens and a nature shop. It is a gateway for visitors to peatland nature reserves within the area. The IPCC relies entirely on donations from supporters to meet the costs of running the centre, managing our reserves and providing education and information to the public.

The role of Development officer is crucial in communicating our campaigns to the public and raising funds to achieve our mission of conserving a representative sample of the peatlands of Ireland for future generations to enjoy.

The 24-month contract post of Development Officer will include, but will not necessarily be limited to, the following duties:

Fundraising Duties
o Increasing the supporter base of the charity substantially through a variety of fundraising and supporter development and recruitment mechanisms
o Maintaining a database of supporters including inputting all responses such as funding donations, non-financial donations, volunteer activity and other responses
o Outputting fund raising and supporter appeals eight times per year as part of the fundraising strategy of the IPCC
o Organising an annual raffle - seeking prizes, layout of tickets, printing and distribution
o Mail order business trading including processing and dispatching orders and developing a network of external outlets for IPCC's products
o Preparing supporter recruitment leaflets and special appeal fliers
o Preparing the annual Christmas card and gifts catalogue for printing
o Preparing promotional materials for the Nature Shop and Bog of Allen Nature Centre

Communication Duties
o First point of contact on telephone with all supporters
o Meeting and greeting visitors to the Nature Shop and Bog of Allen Nature Centre
o Updating and uploading new communication materials to the IPCC web site at www.ipcc.ie
o Preparing printed newsletters, supporter welcome packs, press releases and web mail for supporters and volunteers
o Organising awareness events for visitors to the Bog of Allen Nature Centre
o Participating in external awareness raising events and information stands
o Provision of information to the public on peatland conservation and biodiversity

Administrative and Business Management Duties

Detailed Job Description

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council is a national charity campaigning for the protection of a representative sample of bogs and fens for future generations to enjoy. This involves acquiring and managing reserves for peatland conservation and education and providing members of the public with information about nature conservation management. Currently the IPCC own three peatland reserves (Lodge Bog, Lullymore West Bog and Fenor Bog) which we manage for nature conservation and biodiversity protection in Kildare and Waterford. In addition at our headquarters in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre, Lullymore in Co. Kildare we are developing a demonstration site consisting of a series of habitats and gardens for the protection of biodiversity. The Bog of Allen Nature Centre is a centre of excellence for peatland conservation, education and research.

The Conservation and Reserves Officer is a new position to be created within the organization. The role of this post will be crucial in helping us to achieve our mission. This individual will be responsible for managing IPCC's nature reserves for conservation using best practice techniques, for developing conservation management plans for existing and new reserves and for carrying out a variety of site monitoring and research actions. As the Irish Peatland Conservation Council is a charity, which is entirely funded by voluntary contributions, fundraising for peatland conservation research and management will be an integral part of the Conservation and Reserves Officer's work. In addition, with a small work force the IPCC is very reliant on volunteers and therefore providing training for volunteers to implement site work plans will be vital. As part of our national campaign for conserving peatlands, providing knowledge and skills in peatland conservation and management to private landowners will also be an important aspect of this post.

Main responsibilities of the Conservation and Reserves Officer Post:
o To co-ordinate the management of IPCC's reserves and properties in Kildare and Waterford for nature conservation and biodiversity

o To co-ordinate scientific research on IPCC's peatland reserves

o To develop a biodiversity management plan for IPCC's gardens at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre

o To develop and publicise a DIY management tool kit brochure for supporters and farmers engaged in peatland conservation and biodiversity enhancement around the country
o To co-ordinate the management activities at Lodge Bog including once off and recurrent actions.

o To co-ordinate the management activities at Fenor Bog including once off and recurrent actions in liaison with the Moin Fhionnurach Development Association.

o To input into the IPCC's Peatland Conservation Plan 2020 on management and other issues as relevant
o To maintain wildlife records and site diaries for all IPCC properties
o To annually submit wildlife records for IPCC reserves to the relevant biodiversity monitoring agencies
o To publicise IPCC's role in peatland management and to attract consultancy work relating to this area of activity.
o To update and maintain all IPCC site management plans
o To develop a conservation action plan for Fenor Bog in consultation with our partners ­ the Moin Fhionnurach Development Association.
o To acquire new properties for IPCC and develop them accordingly
o To co-ordinate the marsh fritillary surveys of the National Parks and Wildlife Service or Biodiversity Group
o To undertake monitoring of butterfly populations on Lullymore West Bog annually
o To monitor the water table levels on Fenor Bog and Lodge Bog annually
o To monitor garden birds and other wildlife at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre annually

Personal Profile:
The successful applicant must be suitably qualified with a primary degree in an environmental discipline and preferably hold a post graduate qualification. A demonstrated interest and knowledge of ecology and Irish habitats, flora, birds and other fauna is a necessity. Experience in the management of land for nature conservation, in field research methods and fundraising would be highly desirable.

The applicant should be methodical, computer literate, have excellent interpersonal skills, report writing skills, have a general knowledge of the environment and a proven record to deliver results.

Salary:
Full time 24 months employment contract to include annual leave entitlement and an extension option.

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council is a national charity campaigning for the protection of a representative sample of bogs and fens. We are based in the Bog of Allen Nature Centre at Lullymore in Co. Kildare. We manage two areas of peatland adjacent to Lullymore for conservation and education. The Bog of Allen Nature Centre occupies a renovated mid 19th century farm building and stables. Within the buildings we have a visitor centre which includes a museum and permanent exhibitions, a nature shop, a classroom and a research library. We also have our administrative offices in the buildings. Within the grounds we are developing a variety of wetland and woodland habitats, maintaining a greenhouse of insect-eating plants and constructing and planting nature conservation gardens.

At the Bog of Allen Nature Centre we are working to develop a centre of excellence for peatland conservation, education and research. The role of environmental education officer is crucial in reaching this goal. This person will be responsible for promoting IPCC's goals of peatland education and sustainable living. They will draw on all of the resources included at the centre to complete the tasks outlined below.

The 18-month contract post of Environmental Education Officer will include, but will not necessarily be limited to, the following duties:

Assisting with the writing, editing and laying out Peatland News Magazine twice yearly
Maintaining and updating IPCC's web site at www.ipcc.ie and preparing new materials for the web site
Issuing regular press releases and providing follow up interviews for press and media contacts
Providing and delivering training courses for teachers, the general public and information guides on natural habitats, gardening, composting and environmental issues

BOGS AND WILDLIFE INFORMATION GUIDES

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council and KELT are seeking expressions of interest from potential candidates to join a panel of Information Guides being formed to deliver a lifestyles education programme focusing on bogs and the environment at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre, Lullymore, Rathangan, Co. Kildare. The programme is aimed at primary and post primary school students, the general public and special interest groups. The programme will be skills-based and will involve outdoor studies in the environment of the bogs, woodlands and wetlands of the Bog of Allen Area.

Applicants should have an interest in bogs, the environment and gardening and must be able to communicate effectively with young people and adults. A two week training programme will be given by experts in the Irish Peatland Conservation Council to successful candidates. Information Guides will work from the Bog of Allen Nature Centre and will need to be available during the months of June to October 2005, on weekdays and occasionally at weekends.

IPCC and KELT acknowledge the support of the LEADER PLUS programme which is funded by the Irish Government and part-financed by the European Union under the National Development Plan, 2000-2006.

         

FURTHER INFORMATION
A 60 hour training programme for Information Guides will focus on the natural and built environment of County Kildare including woodlands, peatlands and archaeological sites and the sustainable use and care of this heritage. The course will be given in June by IPCC staff at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre. The programme will include work shops, field trips, work experience evaluations and skills knowledge.

The course content will include: introduction, earth education, ecology of bogs, cutaway bogs field studies, gardening audit, garden waste recycling, composting, pond dipping, woodland invertebrates and an archeological site field trip.

An active learning approach will be adopted and will include, slide shows, video work shops, practical work experience and evaluations, guiding skills, use of keys, educational portfolio creation and field studies methodologies.

The result would be a panel of 10 trained guides who would have the skills, confidence and resources they need to deliver an environmental awareness programme on Caring for Kildare's Environment from June to October 2005 to visitors to the Bog of Allen Nature Centre.

INFORMATION GUIDES PAYMENTS
Information Guides will be paid on a monthy basis according to the number of hours they have worked. The rate per hour will be ¤15. Information Guides will be self employed contractors and must take care of their own tax liability. Claim forms will be issued by IPCC to Information Guides for completion.

EDUCATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMME OUTLINE
IPCC market a number of education programmes to schools and special interest groups. Bookings are received at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre and groups arrive to the centre to take part in the programme. Schools generally attend the centre from 10am until 1pm or 2pm in the afternoon. Special Interest Group hours might vary depending on the distance they are travelling to the centre. Occasionally IPCC offers guided tours of our centre at weekends or in summer months in the early evening.

Bog of Allen Project Manager with IPCC

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council intends to purchase the former Peatland World Centre at Lullymore, Rathangan, Co. Kildare. The aims of the IPCC are:

To locate our head quarters at this location within the Bog of Allen
To develop indoor and outdoor education and public awareness displays on peatlands and environmental issues at the project and
To create a commercially viable conservation project and centre of excellence in Co. Kildare.

The buildings cover 8,000 square feet and are located on 2 acres of land. Initially the buildings and grounds will require renovation and upgrading of services. Subsequently, habitat creation projects and the development of education and public awareness exhibits will be undertaken.

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council is seeking a person to fill a contract post as Bog of Allen Project Manager within the organisation commencing in autumn 2003. The contract will include, but will not necessarily be limited to, the following duties:

o working with IPCC Board of Directors and staff on the preparation of business and development plans for the Bog of Allen Project
o fundraising to meet the costs of the development plan for the Bog of Allen Project
o marketing of the Bog of Allen Project
o supervising building and grounds clearance at Bog of Allen Project
o supervising the installation of services at the Bog of Allen Project
o managing the Bog of Allen project budget
o welcoming IPCC supporters and sponsors to the Bog of Allen Project
o liaison with press media on the promotion of the Bog of Allen Project
o recruiting, co-ordinating and training volunteers and staff
o prepare and execute an annual reserve management plan for the Bog of Allen Project
o assisting with design and implementation of visitor access and outdoor exhibitions at the Bog of Allen Project
o handling enquiries from the general public
o participating in IPCC outreach education programmes at the project
o Bog of Allen Project building and grounds maintenance, keyholder and security

The successful applicant will have relevant fundraising and PR experience, excellent organisational and management skills, marketing, project supervision and management, networking skills, a proven record to deliver results and an interest and understanding of environmental issues.

The candidate will be expected to work from IPCC's head office Bog of Allen Project, Lullymore, Co Kildare on a daily basis. Full time 24 month contract to include annual leave entitlement. Contract value Euro 35k per annum, plus incentives and work related expenses.
