Peatland Protection CharterThere is a growing awareness that raised bogs are seriously threatened and in decline. These rare and unique wildlife habitats have taken thousands of years to develop and are being exploited by commercial peat extraction. Since the 1940's, intensive methods of extracting peat have been used by companies to produce moss peat and other garden products. Today, less that 8% of Ireland's original raised bog habitats remain and many conservation worthy areas are being mined for moss peat at this very moment. The Irish Peatlands Conservation Council have launched a Peat-Free Garden Campaign to curb the demand for moss peat in gardens. Our aim is to change people's habits and to keep peat where it belongs - in the bogs. Garden plants don't need peat, but wild ones such as sundew and butterworts do. If you are a user of peat - be it a gardener, parks manager, county council, landscape designer, horticulturalist - there are plenty of environmentally friendly sustainable garden products that you could use to go peat-free and help support the conservation of bogs. Links on the left hand bar of this page give you more information on the alternatives available. If you are able to kick the peat habit - you can register your support for our Peat-free Garden Campaign by signing the Peatland Protection Charter below. If you sign our peatland
protection charter your name will be added to the list of supporters
of our Peat-free Garden Campaign and you will be issued with
a Peat-free Peatland Protection Charter Certificate for display.
