Stampin' the Bogs
For release 15th October 2001
Two 6th year students, Brigid
Reilly and Emma Dolan from Ardee Community
School Co.Louth, recently took on a challenge under the Gaisce
Award to
collect 2000 used stamps and £50 each to help save the
bogs.
The project started in February and was completed in June.
Today they
travelled to Dublin to the IPCC office to Dr. Peter Foss, Chairman
of the
IPCC, with the stamps which weighed 2,000g and a £100 pound
note.
"With the funds raised IPCC can purchase 1/8th of an
acre of bogland when a
site becomes available", said Dr. Peter Foss.
The students collected the funds and the stamps from relatives
and friends,
other students the local newspaper and Ardee Community School.
Both students
are familiar with bogs having visited the local wild bog in Rathbran,
Co.
Meath.
Later this month the students will be presented with medals
under the
Presidents Gaisce Award for their achievements for bog conservation
