Bellamy Raises Euro 350
for Irish Bogs
For release 1 February 2003
IPCC's on-line auction for 2 signed hardback copies of Professor
David
Bellamys book on Bogs entitled "Bellamy Ireland The
Wild Boglands" raised
a total of Euro 350 for the Save the Bogs Campaign and the Burns
Bog
Conservation Society.
The IPCC are putting their share of the auction income towards
conservation
work on their reserve at Fenor Bog, Co Waterford. This year the
IPCC are
running a Fenor Bog Water Project which aims to ensure that this
watery
wetland has an adequate and clean supply of water to ensure the
future of
the 350 species of plants and animals that live in the bog.
The Burns Bog Conservation Society will use its funds for
its ongoing
educational programs. Last year almost 2,000 students and adults
attended
our tours of the Delta Nature Reserve and the central Bog. This
is a 20%
increase over last year.
Burns Bog is STILL NOT SAVED and continues to be at risk of
destruction.
Our public awareness campaign continues. Trees between 60 -
100 yeasr old
were cut down on the "lagg" next to the old peat plant
site a few
weeks ago. The area clear felled was the size of three football
fields.
We are hoping to publish two new books about Burns Bog this
year.
IPCC and the Burns Bog Conservation Society would like to
thank everyone who
supported the auction.
