Irish bogs, with their unique wildlife habitats, are in danger of extinction.
Only 18% of these peatlands remain in their natural state. A massive 82% have been obliterated with forestry, agriculture and peat harvesting. What remains are proving to be a major international tourist attraction for thousands of world-wide visitors annually.
The Irish Peatland Conservation Council, which has been fighting for bogland preservation for 15 years, aims to have the issue placed right at the top of the Government's conservation agenda.
The IPCC will hold a major one-day conference in Dublin on November 14, where it's Peatland Conservation 2000 Plan will be highlighted. This is a formula for a sustainable development strategy for peatland conservation in Ireland.
Irish and international experts will share ideas on the wise use of bogland resources, examine the effectiveness of management and restoration techniques, and discuss peatland conservation strategies in other European countries.
