Recycle in the Garden and Help Save the Bogs

For release 4th May 2001

A new expo encourages gardener's to recycle kitchen waste, fallen leaves and
prunings in a bid to help save the bogs. By making their own composts
gardener's can avoid using tonnes of peat in their garden which is coming
from our wild boglands and is causing a massive decline in our heritage and
wildlife.

The wild bogs and peat-free gardening expo will be on display in ENFO, the
Environmental Information Centre, at 17 St Andrew Street, Dublin 2 from the
8th May to 16th June 2001, Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm. Admission is
free.

Does the word "bog" make you think just of turf? Does the bog sound only of
wind and rain? Did you know that there are flying dragons and talking birds
in the bog? Come on down the old bog road to discover secrets, centuries
old. Hear the birds, and explore the strange plants and animals that live in
the bog. Discover bounty from the bog. Find out how to make your own
peat-free composts. Go wild in the garden.

The exhibition looks at bogs, their wildlife, history, threats and
conservation and encourages people to take action for bogs by avoiding the
use of peat in the garden. This is easily done by recycling kitchen and
garden waste. Hands-on models will be a feature of the Expo.

The Wild Boglands and Peat-free Gardening Exhibition is supported by Flogas
and ENFO.

For school groups a series of workshops are planned focusing on different
aspects of bogs and peat-free gardening. The workshops will comprise a tour
of the exhibition followed by a quiz and an arts and crafts session. Tel:
ENFO at 01-8882001 to book your class in.
