New Bog Field Studies Guide for Teachers

For release 9 April 1998

A Day on the Bog - a comprehensive field studies guide produced by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council - is targeted at primary and secondary school teachers and instructors in Education Centres.

The guide which contains information on bogs, worksheets and identification keys will appeal to teachers and students undertaking school projects.

Packed with useful data it contains information on Irish peatlands, their ecology and conservation. It will help to build up the students' knowledge and understanding about bogs before embarking on a field excursion. It contains work sheets in which students can compile plant and animal check lists about bogs visited. Instructions are given explaining how to map a fossil bog woodland area. It also looks at how to investigate the effects of turf cutting on the vegetation, hydrology and peat soil properties of a bog.

Bog field study resources, follow-up information, photocopiable bog plant and animal keys, details of models to make, a bog board game and sample data sets for interpretation are some of the many exciting features of this educational pack.

Surfers of the Internet who want to get up to speed about the Save The Bogs Campaign are given details about how to visit IPCC's regularly updated World Wide Web Site.

"This guide is a must for anyone interested in bogs and was developed by the IPCC following 10 years of providing field studies training for teachers," says Dr Catherine O'Connell, IPCC Head of Education.

The Guide costs £7 which includes postage and packaging and is available from IPCC, 119 Capel Street, Dublin 1. Tel 01 872 2397.
