No Dump for Girely Bog
NHA
For release 15 February 2003
No Dump for Girley Bog NHA
Following representations from IPCC, we are delighted with
the decision of
Meath County Council to refuse planning permission for a dump
at Girley Bog
Natural Heritage Area (NHA), Co. Meath. The proposed 8.9 hectare
dump was
for the purpose of disposing large quantities of inorganic waste,
such as building rubble and topsoil.
The decision of the council to refuse permission for the dump
was based on
its proximity to Girley Bog, an area earmarked for protection
in Meath's
County Development Plan. The development would have been in
contravention
of this plan and it also had the potential to impact negatively
on the bog
itself.
Girley Bog (NHA 1580) is one of the most easterly raised bogs
in the country
that remains intact. It was recently formally designed as a
NHA by Minister
Martin Cullen, meaning that it is now one of the few NHAs in
the country
that have the statutory protection of the Wildlife Act 2000.
