Bogs in the Classroom Course 2002

Galway - Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre & Lough Mask Bog

(for Primary, Junior Cert, Transition Year and Leaving Cert Teachers)

Aims of this Course
To provide teachers with the resources and expertise they need to introduce
practical bog studies to all age groups. All participants receive
tailor-made teaching publications produced by the IPCC. Training is given in
field studies methods (quadrats, conservation evaluation, pond-dipping, the
use of keys) and the analysis of data.

Course Content
1. Introduction & resource distribution.
2. Discovering the Wild Boglands Video presentation & questionnaire.
3. Plant identification & adaptations to the bog habitat using keys.
4. Lunch
Field Trip
5 field trip to Lough Mask Bog, Co. Galway
bog trot - identifying plants, descriptive work
looking at wet/dry bog areas using quadrats
cutover bog habitats
pond-dipping, food webs
Model making of a blanket bog. Stages in bog formation. Time scale
6. Follow-Up - peatland biodiversity

Bring wellington boots, wet gear and an empty clear plastic 1 litre soft
drink bottle.

Bring packed lunch

The IPCC wish to acknowledge the funding provided by the Department of
Education & Science In-Career Development Unit and the European Social Fund.

Teachers are welcome to attend the course for free. Other educationalists
