Irish Raised Bogs
Conservation, Utilisation and After-Use
Symposium 4 - 12 September 2001

A symposium consisting of an 8 day study tour (4-11 September
2001) and conference (12 September 2001).
The tour will showcase all aspects of the Irish midland peat
resource including the network of conserved raised bogs, archaeological
sites, and the after use of the raised bogs which have been extracted
by hand and industrially.
The study tour will be followed by a day long conference.
The cost for participants to include information pack, accommodation,
food and transport for study tour and conference will be IR£499
Euro 635 (approx. US $ 600)
The study tour will visit the following sites and focus on
the topics below (provisional programme).
o Turraun Bog, natural regeneration and CO2 emission project
o Tonduff, forestry on cutaway raised bog
o Lough Boora Parklands, created wetland systems and wildlife
on former industrial sites
o Clara and Raheenmore Bogs, raised bog restoration project
o Killaun, natural habitat colonisation, biodiversity of regenerated
hand cut raised bogs
o Ballynamona Bog, intact raised bog woodland habitats
o Tullaghan Rock Bog and Curraghlehannagh Bogs, natural lagg,
conserving clusters of raised bogs
o Corlea Visitor Centre, and Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit
studies
The study tour will be followed by a one day conference focusing
on the main themes of the symposium: Conservation, Restoration,
Utilisation, After Use and Rehabilitation of midland raised bogs.
A poster session will be included.
