The Rattlin' Bog - Field Course for TeachersFor Release 5th May 2000 20 teachers from Galway, Clare, Mayo and Roscommon are about to find out just what's in the rattlin' bog down in the valley o! on a special training course on bogs, to be held at the Anno Santo Hotel, Threadneedle Road, Galway on Saturday next, the 13th May 2000. This is the fifth year of the course which is hosted by the Galway Teachers' Centre. Teachers on the course will come close to walking on water as they squelch across the heather hummocks, the mossy pools and the flushed fens of Cloona Bog, just off the Tuam road outside Galway. This is an area of cutaway bog which has a rich variety of habitats and wildlife with up to 200 species of plant, animal and bird present in the bog. The trip will be led by Dr Catherine O'Connell of the Irish Peatland Conservation Council. The aim of the course is to provide teachers with the resources and expertise they need to introduce bog studies to their students. Each teacher will receive a special field studies guide to bogs and information about IPCC's web site where they can extend their knowledge of bogs world wide.
