MARCH 2010

Thursday 4th - IPCC's launches new Green Living Guide. IPCC's green living guide will introduce you to the basics of how to get started with composting, conserving energy and water and how to encourage wildlife into your garden.

Mon. 15th - Fri. 19th - Buy Irish Festival in the Nature Shop at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre to help us celebrate St. Patrick's week. Get your turf burning cottages, lucky black bog cats, Brigid's Crosses, Scoib baskets, Ireland jigsaws and postcard and stamp sets during this week long celebration. Saturday 20th - Irish Science Teachers' Association Annual Conference. Visit the IPCC stand at the conference in Sligo Institute of Technology.

APRIL 2010

1st - 30th - National Spring Clean Month is a nation-wide anti-litter initiative, join the IPCC at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre and help us throughout the month of April to remove litter from nature reserves in the local area. For further information contact 045-860133.

Monday & Tuesday 12th & 13th - Enroll now for IPCC new course 'Measuring, Monitoring and Management of Irish Habitats and Wildlife'. Irelands' habitats and wildlife are under threat from pollution, human interference and invasive species. Learn how to conserve, restore and monitor habitats and wildlife throughout Ireland with this new two day course. The cost per participant is 95 Euro and places are limited. Activities supervised by experienced tutors to include: * Pond Dipping, * Frog Search and * Froggy Crafts 10am 1pm. Bring a snack pack, rain coat and outdoor shoes. MAY 2010

Tues 18th and Wed 19th May from 10.30am to 4pm: Volunteer Days. We are looking for volunteers to help us set up 3 new trials of Sphagnum cultivation methods on Lodge Bog South. This work involves removing vegetation from 25m square plots, removing the top few centimetres of oxidized peat and innoculating the area with Sphagnum moss. So we are looking for help with digging of the plots and also with searching for and gathering up the Sphagnum. Volunteers should bring wet gear, wellies and a packed lunch. Sunday 23rd May - To celebrate National Biodiversity week the Bog of Allen Nature Centre will be hosting a Biodiversity Show from 12noon-4pm. A feature talk entitled Monitoring Irish Butterflies will be given by Richella Duggan and this will be followed by a walk to Lullymore West bog reserve where the endangered Marsh Fritillary butterfly is breeding. Adults and children welcome. Free Admission. Bring picnic. This event is being run especially for International Year of Biodiveristy which is sponsored by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the Notice Nature Campaign. The event is also supported by Kildare County Council with a Festival Grant 2010.

Sat 29th and Sun 30th May: Dublin Zoo Native Species weekend. The weekend celebrates all of the wonderful flora and fauna species native to Ireland. Why not come along and visit the IPCC stand and see insect eating plants, dip for mini-beasts in our bog pond and learn how to make a craft using bog plants. All welcome. Thurs. 1st - Wed. 7th. 'An Introduction to Composting, Nature Crafts and the Wild boglands' teacher training course at Kildare Education Centre. This course is designed to introduce teachers to the basics of composting, simple crafty ideas, an introduction into the wild boglands of Ireland, some field study techniques and other activities teachers can carry out with their students when visiting a peatland. Sunday 25th July- INTERNATIONAL BOG DAY. Join us at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre from 2-5pm to celebrate this world wide event. Events will include an introduction to IPCC's Peatland Conservation Action Plan 2020 by Tadhg O Corcora followed by a walk to Lodge bog where participants will see some of the ongoing conservation work been undertaken by staff and volunteers of IPCC on the site. Adults and children welcome. Free Admission. Bring picnic. Sun. 22nd August - HERITAGE WEEK EVENT. - Join the IPCCs at Lodge Bog, Co. Kildare for a day renovating the visitor Boardwalk on the bog. 11am to 4pm, meeting at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre. Depending on the number of participants we will also be doing a litter pick up on the bog and removing invasive species that are affecting the hydrology of the site. Bring wellies and packed lunch. Thursday 16th - Introduction to Sphagnum identifcation in conjunction with the National Biodiversity Data Centre. This one day course runs from 10 am to 4pm and costs just Euro20 (including lunch). It is suitable for beginners and established recorders. It aims to increase knowledge of the Sphagnum mosses which are the main constituent in the peat of raised bogs. Sunday 26th - Green Living and Lifestyle Open Day at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre from12noon-4pm. In a change from previous years the IPCC are bringing forward their last open day of the year. This is mainly due to poor weather experienced towards the end of the year. All are welcome to this event led by Nuala Madigan and the day will focus on how we can divert waste, decrease our energy consumption, garden with wildlife in mind and use traditional cleaning remedies for around the home.
