Voluntary workers - rights and responsibilities

Your Rights

Variety

You have a right to ask for a new job if you feel unsatisfied with your work, subject to availability of another job.

Information

You have the right to information about the work you will be doing, and about the significance of that work. You also have the right to information about changes within the structure of IPCC and the role of paid staff.

Training

You have the right to training to enable you to carry out your work. This may be on the job training programmes or special workshops.

Say 'No'

You have the right to say 'No' if you are asked to do a job you do not wish to do.

Expenses

You have the right to claim expenses in carrying out voluntary work (fares to and from work).

Recognition

You have the right to some form of thanks for what you do.

Respect

You are entitled to support and respect from your co-workers, both paid and voluntary.

Fairness

You have the right to be treated fairly. You have a right to guidance and direction. You have the right to make suggestions and to have respect shown when you offer an opinion.

Insurance

You have the right to insurance cover in the case of accident while working voluntarily for IPCC.

Participation

You have the right to participate in the decision forming process relevant to the area of your work, and be involved in other activities where appropriate.

References

You have a right to a reference, if requested, including skills and responsibilities undertaken during your time with IPCC.

Your Responsibilities

Commitment

IPCC expects you to maintain your commitment to the organisation and its philosophy (see "information for voluntary Staff"). This includes representing IPCC policy at all times when you are undertaking work for the organisation, rather than your personal opinions, views and standards.

Reliability

The position you take on is important to our activities. The people you are working with will increasingly depend on you. You are expected to be reliable and to notify the appropriate person of you are not available as arranged, or if you do not wish to continue volunteering.

Honesty

IPCC expects you to act in an honest and responsible manner at all times, including respecting your work environment and any equipment you are using.

Communication

You are expected to speak up when you need help or information and to make suggestions when you see a need. In this way, everyone can benefit from your views and experiences. If you have a problem. please discuss it with your supervisor or the Volunteers Co-ordinator. We can only act when we are aware of problems.

Confidentiality

You are expected to maintain confidentiality within the work environment and outside the IPCC office.

Involvement

While there is the possibility of becoming involved in an 'exciting' IPCC project, most of the work you will be involved in will be the routine tasks, in support of our campaigners, which are essential to the running of the organisation. Be prepared for lots of filing, photocopying and mailing!
