In Africa bogs are relatively rare, they cover an area of 58,405 km². African peatlands are classified into five types; blanket bogs, raised bogs, valley peatlands, fens and reed swamps. The major peatland areas are the highlands of Burundi, Rwanda, South Africa, southwestern Uganda, the highland area of Zaire and the Aberdane Range and the Cherangani Hills in western Kenya.
