ASIA

In Asia peatlands cover a total area of 24,446,500 ha. The largest peatlands areas are found in Indonesia, China, and Malaysia. Indonesia has the largest peatland area in the tropical zone. Fresh water swamp, peat swamps, eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic types of peatland occur in the tropics. The peat swamps of Indonesia support a forest vegetation from which some tree species are logged commerially.

In addition extensive peatlands are also found in many of countries that were once part of the USSR. In paricular the mires of Siberia cover a vast area of more than 760,000,000 ha. And in contrast to what many people think many of these mires are not frozen all year round and are not in perma frsot area.

To visit the peatlands of Asia just click on the country you want to visit from the list on the left hand side.

If you have pictures that you took of peatlands from a country not shown in our tour that you would like to submit - why not e-mail them to Peter Foss at info@ipcc.ie - along with a caption. I'll consider adding them to our collection of great peatland pictures.
