About 60% of the worlds peat resources are found in Russia where Peatlands cover an area of 570,000km². A variety of peatland types are found including large oligotrophic peatlands found around lakes, in watersheds and former kettle holes; eutrophic peat deposits usually cover smaller areas. Peatlands have been utilised for a variety of purposes including fuel and chemical production (5%); agriculture (12%); forestry (7%) and peat production (11%). Protected reserves account for 63% of the peatland area.
