Night Time Bat Walk- 20th June- 9:45pm Join us for an exciting evening of bat hunting with Kildare Bat Group. We will listen for some of Irelands iconic bat species such as the Common pipistrelle, Daubenton’s bat, the Soprano pipistrelle and Natterer’s bat. We may even see them flitting above our heads as they embark on their nighttime feed. We will meet at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre at 9:45pm. We hope to see you there!
International Bog Day – 27th July – 12noon-4pm Join the Irish Peatland Conservation Council for this annual family friendly celebration of Irish bogs. The Bog of Allen Nature Centre will be open free of charge throughout the day. Enjoy guided tours of the peatland exhibition and peat free gardens, light refreshments will be available and of course a bog walk will be offered to visitors at 2.30pm. Pond dipping will be available throughout the event for young visitors to discover what lives beneath the bog pools. All welcome. This event is made possible with funding support from Kildare County Council through their Festival grant 2025.
Heritage Week 2025 – 16th-24th August
These years theme is ‘Exploring Our Foundations’ The theme invites us to delve into the building blocks of our heritage; not just the structures, but the landscapes and cultural activities that have shaped us. The IPCC have planned a week of opportunties for you to explore Ireland’s peatland foundations which includes bog walks, guided tours of the peatland exhibition and an online talk. There is something for everyone so join the IPCC and explore with us the many aspects of the wet and wild Irish bogland landscape.
Monday 18th-Friday 22nd August – Daily 10am-4pm The Bog of Allen Nature Centre will be open free of charge for you to explore the many aspects of Irish peatlands. Enjoy a guided or self guided tour of the peatland exhibition which includes the formation, traditional uses and cutting methods of peat, flora and fauna, archeological significance and the story of peatland conservation. The peat free wildlife gardens will also be open to visitors where you can discover Ireland largest display of insect eating plants. No booking necessary.
Lodge Bog Walk and Talk – 18th August – 6.30pm
Meet the IPCC staff at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre (R51V293) and take a walk to Lodge bog. Did you know that 20% of the island of Ireland is bogland habitat? Explore this peatlands formation and learn of the IPCC’s species monitoring undertaken on the reserve in 2025 including a dragonfly and damselfly survey supported by Kildare County Council through their Heritage Grant. Participants should wear clothes appropriate for the outdoors.
Butterfly Walk to Lullymore West Nature Reserve – 19th August – 11am
Butterflies are one of Ireland’s most recognisable and loved species. At an early age we learn about their lifecycle in school and watch for the different coloured butterflies visiting our gardens. Butterflies are important pollinators and a food source for other animals. Explore with the IPCC the diversity of butterflies on Lullymore West nature reserve. No booking necessary meet at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre (R51V293) at 10.45am. Participants should wear clothes appropriate for the outdoors.
Girley Bog walk and talk – 20th August – 6.30pm Join the IPCC for a walk and talk to Girley Bog. Explore this peatlands formation and learn of the IPCC’s species monitoring undertaken on the reserve in 2025 including a dragonfly and damselfly survey. Participants should wear clothes appropriate for the outdoors. Meet at Girley Hall (C15 PV21) at 6.30pm.
Lunchtime with IPCC – Friday 22nd August – 1pm Join the IPCC for this online event celebrating the formation and unique flora and fauna of Irish bogs. How did bogs grow and what characteristics make bogs such a unique habitat. This is an online event which you can register for on Eventbrite
